Data interrogators!

'ello, 'ello, 'ello. What have we here then? It's only a data interrogator!!

This week we have been asking and answering lots of questions. We have used doodle buddy on the ipad to create bar charts to show our favourite subject at school.

ICT (computing) is very popular! So is history - all that lovely learning about the Great Fire of London, Samuel Pepys and Florence Nightingale methinks.

Today the data interrogators thought of questions that they would like answered, then they went off to different classes to ask their questions. Once they had gathered their data, they used a spreadsheet to create a graph for them.

Interviewing Florence Nightingale

Today we were able to imagine asking Florence Nightingale lots of questions about the hospital in Scutari. We wanted to know exactly what it was like there and what she did. We asked some brilliant questions!

Florence Nightingale's diary

Brave children from Rowan Class being a pupil in role as Florence Nightingale, reading their diary entries from when they first stepped into Scutari Hospital.

Drama in the classroom: Scutari hospital

We wondered what it was like for the soldiers and nurses in Scutari hospital. Conditions were very poor. Tell your family all about it Rowan class!

Wounded soldiers

Soldiers were not getting better because the hygiene was so poor in the hospital.

Many soldiers had lost their limbs in the battles.

The smell in the hospital was terrible.

The nurses were shocked at the poor conditions and set to work restoring order and cleanliness.

Super researcher!

Wow! Evie has completed lots of research at home about Florence Nightingale! What a star worker!

Interview with Nurse Denty

Today we were really lucky to be able to interview Mrs Denty, to find out what it is like to be a modern day nurse. We had found out a bot about Edith Cavell last week and are learning. About Florence Nightingale, so we wanted to know what the differences were between nursing now, and in Victorian times. We wrote down lots of different questions to ask her.

Mrs Denty bought in some of the tools that she uses, like forceps. She answered lots of our questions and told us lots of facts about nurses as well as things about her life as a nurse.

We learned what some of her tools did and were able to have a play with them! We know that lots of them are sterilised so that germs don't spread. Mrs Denty also showed us a chart for washing your hands properly like a nurse!

We were able to write lots of things that we learned this afternoon.

Thank you Mrs Denty for giving up your time to help us with our learning!

A very shabby suitcase...

What if you went to live in a very old house and whilst you were exploring you came across a very old, shabby looking suitcase. What would you do?

Would you listen very carefully to make sure there was nothing alive in it?

Would you shake it to see if anything rattled?

Would you open it? Rowan class decided they would open it very carefully, as soon as they worked out how ...

then peek inside to see what was in it before opening it up fully.

Well there wasn't anything dangerous looking, but there was some curious things.

A lamp

and a letter.

Maya read the letter and it told us that someone called Florence was going to a hospital, where there was a war. Maya thought it was from someone called Florence Nightingale. She was writing to her parents to tell them not to worry.

In the suitcase there was also an apron,

a very old looking blouse,

an old fashioned hat (that's what Jasper thought)

a 'dress' skirt,

another blouse,

and a sash with a funny word on it.

There was an old fashioned shawl, but it was very thin and didn't look like it would keep anyone warm. The letter said Florence was about to board a boat. We thought that maybe she was going somewhere hot.

There was another blouse, apron and more hats in the suitcase too.

We were beginning to wonder lots of things ...
