History investigators!

Today we received a letter and a very old box! 

The letter was from the archaeology team at St Paul's Cathedral! It was asking for our help to discover facts about the old box. We were intrigued, but some of us thought we should not open the box as we did not know what was inside. 

We made a decision alley to show who thought we should or shouldn't open the box.

Lots of us gave great reasons why we should or shouldn't open it...

but the majority decision was to open the box and find out what was inside.

Opening the box

The letter said that there were delicate things in the box, so we made sure we wore our special gloves to protect things. 

There was a very old book in the box. We wondered what it was.

There was an old brooch. It looked precious. 

Joe found a very unusual bottle in the box. We wondered what it was for. Maybe water?

Some very old keys! The owner of the box must have had lots of doors to lock and unlock.

We opened the book very carefully and realised it was a diary and it belonged to someone called Samuel Pepys. But who was he? We needed to find out more.

Who was Samuel Pepys?

After we had opened the box we went to start our research to find out just who Samuel Pepys was and why he had such items in his box. We wondered why he buried the box and why there was cheese in it! 

We found out a lot by looking on the internet.
