The Old School Hall

On Friday we went down to the Old School to find out what it was like to go to school there. We learned so much from looking around and from asking questions to the lovely people that we met, who went to school there. They told us lots of interesting facts. If you ask us, we can tell you all about it! We were really grateful for Mrs Dennis, Mr Gedge and Mr Hustler who told us all about their experiences.

Letter from a nurse

I wonder what a nurse would have written in a letter home from Scutari hospital. Well just ask Maya! She did a brilliant bit of improvisation when she imagined she was reading out a letter that she had sent home from the Crimean War.

Interviewing Florence Nightingale

Today we were able to imagine asking Florence Nightingale lots of questions about the hospital in Scutari. We wanted to know exactly what it was like there and what she did. We asked some brilliant questions!

Florence Nightingale's diary

We wondered what it was like for the soldiers and nurses in Scutari hospital. Conditions were very poor. Tell your family all about it Rowan class! 

Wounded soldiers

Soldiers were not getting better because the hygiene was so poor in the hospital.

Many soldiers had lost their limbs in the battles.

The smell in the hospital was terrible.

The nurses were shocked at the poor conditions and set to work restoring order and cleanliness. 

A very shabby suitcase...

What if you went to live in a very old house and whilst you were exploring you came across a very old, shabby looking suitcase. What would you do?

Would you listen very carefully to make sure there was nothing alive in it?

Would you shake it to see if anything rattled?

Would you open it? Rowan class decided they would open it very carefully, as soon as they worked out how ...

then peek inside to see what was in it before opening it up fully.

Well there wasn't anything dangerous looking, but there was some curious things.

A lamp 

and a letter.

Maya read the letter and it told us that someone called Florence was going to a hospital, where there was a war. Maya thought it was from someone called Florence Nightingale. She was writing to her parents to tell them not to worry.

In the suitcase there was also an apron,

a very old looking blouse, 

 

an old fashioned hat (that's what Jasper thought)

 

a 'dress' skirt,

another blouse,

 

and a sash with a funny word on it. 

 

There was an old fashioned shawl, but it was very thin and didn't look like it would keep anyone warm. The letter said Florence was about to board a boat. We thought that maybe she was going somewhere hot.

 

There was another blouse, apron and more hats in the suitcase too.

We were beginning to wonder lots of things ...
